As we all know last week the BBC deployed its popular iPlayer on the Nintendo Wii, which left many a Sony fanboy (and Xbox fanboys too) up in arms. Where was the PS3 version. Gamers woke up this morning to find the Playstation store has had a facelift. After updating to the new Firmware 2.30 (yes another new firmware update) the PSN store now looks like the image above and by all accounts its slick and easy to use although there are reports of downloads from the store being a little slow – still something for Sony to work on I suppose.

The most anticipated piece of PS3 hardware this year has to be the DualShock 3 controller and it finally became available for sale in the states for a rather pricey $55. Whats so good about it, you may ask? Well this is the controller that should have been released with the Playstation 3 when it was launched and it features the mandatory RUMBLE, or force feedback or whatever its called these days.

The latest PS3 system update (version 2.20), released on 25/03/2008 incorporates the Blu-Ray Disc Profile 2 which in turn introduced BD-LIVE capability to the Playstation 3. A suitably updated Playstation 3 can now make full use of the interactive features available for many upcoming Blu-Ray titles including downloadable video content, ringtones and games.

Sony may be staying tight lipped on the announcement of any new hardware, either globally or for the European market, but they have revealed that they are about to release 2 new bundles for European gamers at least.
The Gran Turismo 5 Prologue pack will launch to support the release of the game come the Spring and will incude the 40GB console and the SixAxis controller.

Well, since we have no further news about the PS3 Lite I’ve decided to keep abreast of general PS3 news and in the last week the sales figures for all 3 major consoles has been announced and guess what – the PS3 is finally starting to gain market share in 2008. January was the best month yet for Sony’s Flagship console, outselling the XBOX 360 and the Nintendo DS. In fact it even gave the Nintendo Wii a run for its money. Earlier this year T3 announced that they have it on good authority that Sony is planning to launch a Slim and Lite edition of their flagship high definition console, the Play Station 3. We dont know if this is true or not at the moment and Sony, as ever is refusing to comment.
