Haze is due any minute now, so where are the reviews?

19 May 2008 4 Comments

Cheap Playstation 3 Games.Haze.jpgHaze has been coming to the PS3 for nigh on eternity, having slipped from its scheduled release last year (nothing new there I suppose, any game worth its salt misses its initial release date these days), but with the game actually due to hit the shelves on the 23rd May there seems to be a very surprising lack of reviews around for it. Not even this months Official Playstation Magazine carries a review, now why is this? Is it really not as good as we all hoped it would be? Well the demo certainly looks fast and furious and I’ll be buying it on the strength of that alone, not to mention Free Radical’s pedigree in the FPS arena with the Timesplitters frachise (love it or hate).

At present, according to Ubisoft themselves there are 2 reviews published:

Haze has been first reviewed by Famitsu and PSM Italy. The game received 34/40 in the famous Japanese magazine and stroke an astonishing 9/10 in PSM.

The game release is closing on quickly now, Haze will be available in stores on May 23rd. It’s time to fight the good fight

However I cant speak Japanese or Italian so I’ll have to take their word for it.

There are three other reviews, and they’re not encouraging:

    http://www.gamershell.com/ps3/haze/review.html ( 6.5/10)

    http://www.avclub.com/content/games/haze (5.8/10)

    http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/875/875229p1.html (4.5/10)

Before reading these I knew only a little of AVClub and Gamershell as game revieew sites (read: nothing but site name) and was all too familiar with IGN and considered them credible, but right now the’re being accused of bias by long time followers of Haze. Might be worth waiting for Gamespot to throw their lot in before deciding to cancel preorders or rush out and buy…

Disappointing to say the least. But lets be honest when OPM didn’t get the scoop a week before the game was due to be release something has to smell bad.

Very true, OPM not reviewing it prior to release was something of a red flag, though the complete lack of “incoming game” coverage for Haze immediately before release was worrying, since the last big release, GTAIV, had plenty of it, ironically GTA seems to have succeeded for all the reasons Haze didn’t, it had an adult plot tied to what could be considered childish gameplay of sandbox exploration and action, while Haze has a childish and simple plot tied to the usually adult (not always) gameplay of FPS action.

Though in truth you can’t call either game or genre adult, both ideally should be entertaining for engaging the player in the action of exploring/fighting and in gameplay terms that comes down to immersion in basic instincts/adrenalin rush and isn’t too cerebral ordinarily. I don’t know, maybe the market is just tired of linear shooters and is starting to really enjoy sandbox action w/ meaningful plot because you can outright avoid the story (or play around the edges) if you don’t like it.

Indeed the appeal of GTA 4 is certainly universal, but perhaps that is because of the history of the franchise. The anticipation amongst gamers of ‘a certain age’ seemed disproportionate to how good you could possibly expect a game to be. Thankfully Rockstar know their subject matter well enough to deliver the final product that everybody was expecting, and given that it was available on both the PS3 and the XBOX 360 it is difficult for either camp to bash the other simply for the sake of it. Haze on the other hand is a PS3 exclusive and has no history other than some manufactured hype and an intriguing attempt to bring social conscience to a genre where it really doesn’t belong, so we could expect some ‘haters’ to appear along the way.

Having said that, Gamespot have reviewed Haze now and have delivered a fairly average 6/10 criticising the games poor AI and bad storytelling. So I guess therein lies the truth If you are going to hype up a game make sure its a good one
